PARENT SCIENTISTS PROTECTING CHILDREN FROM TOXINS PureBond® Hardwood Plywood With No Added Formaldehyde Recommended
Green Parents' List, a network of parent scientists and engineers, has awarded Columbia Forest Products' PureBond hardwood plywood the Healthy Home check mark because of its zero VOC's and no added formaldehyde composition. PureBond is the first building product to receive this distinction.
Green Parents' List was founded by parents with engineering and scientific backgrounds to provide concerned parents with a resource to locate products made by conscientious manufacturers.
"We are very excited to identify manufacturers like Columbia Forest Products. Their PureBond® Hardwood Plywood is made with no added formaldehyde which means families can reduce their VOC exposure in the home," says Patricia Calder, president of Green Parents' List. VOC's are a leading cause of childhood asthma, the number one reason why children miss school in the United States. "The fact that the hardwood plywood is also available from sustainably managed forests is also positive for the environment."
Columbia Forest Products' PureBond plywood hardwood is the first product to receive Green Parents' List Healthy Home check mark. The Healthy Home check mark means that the PureBond plywood hardwood has been checked for VOC emissions, and formaldehyde in particular.
"Columbia Forest Products' PureBond plywood hardwood is a wonderful raw material for furniture and cabinets used in the family environment," says Calder. "We were so impressed with their materials that we broadened our inspection from consumer products and toys to building materials. PureBond opened our eyes."
Todd Vogelsinger, Columbia's director of marketing, said that "because of the work of people like those at the Green Parents' List, kids and families will be better informed of the healthier, safer and smarter choices available to them, across a wide range of products.
"We at Columbia are proud of being included in their program, and are striving to make PureBond easily available and affordable to families across North America," added Vogelsinger. "Consumers can buy it today at over 2,300 Home Depot locations in the US and Canada, and can have it installed by over 825 cabinet shops and furniture manufacturers who have enrolled in our PureBond Fabricator Network.
"Better wood products like PureBond are getting much easier to find," he said.
Green Parents' List Healthy Home criteria for finished products are that products must be checked against the volatile organic compound (VOC) restrictions of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) and surface coatings must meet applicable lead (Pb) restrictions. Green Parents' List also provides third-party validation and promotion of additional green claims beyond the base criteria (e.g. FSC-certification, BPA-free, etc.)
Green Parents' List checks products against restricted materials requirements for substances of particular concern such as lead and other heavy metals, phthalates, 1,4-dioxane, formaldehyde and VOC's.
As parents, they are concerned about the safety and health of children, and the impact of their surrounding environment. As parents with engineering and scientific backgrounds, they have the technical understanding to review products and test reports.
