The natural choice for a formaldehyde-free wood adhesive: Soyad® Adhesive Systems
Columbia Innovations is proud to offer the latest breakthrough in adhesive technology
by Hercules. By combining proprietary resin chemistry with a natural, renewable
resource, Soyad® adhesives provide a cost-competitive, environmentally-friendly
alternative for today's demanding interior wood products market.
Based on soy flour and containing absolutely no formaldehyde, Soyad® adhesives
are quickly becoming the system of choice for industry leading manufacturers who
want to stay ahead of regulations and help improve the quality of indoor air for
their workers and customers.
Designed for the manufacture of decorative plywood, particleboard, MDF, and engineered
wood flooring, Soyad® adhesives offer a number of advantages:
- Easy-to-apply, two-component sprayable liquid system
- Contains no formaldehyde and low VOCs
- Meets CARB Phase II, European, and Japanese standards
- Lower cost than other low emitting alternatives
- Provides excellent water resistance
- Meets LEED® criteria
- Low capital investment
- Minimal impact on productivity
In addition, Columbia Innovations offers consultation services and technical support
for adhesive systems in the forest products industry.
Soyad® Case Histories
Commercial applications confirm that Soyad® adhesive systems are cost-competitive,
environmentally-friendly alternatives to traditional wood adhesives. The following
case histories highlight some of the key benefits that Soyad® adhesives offer
manufacturers of interior wood products.
Soyad® Adhesive Allows Particleboard Manufacturer to Eliminate Formaldehyde
From Its Boards
To comply with new formaldehyde emissions standards, a North American particleboard
manufacturer replaced its existing urea formaldehyde-based adhesive system with
a Soyad® adhesive system from Hercules. Because Soyad® adhesives contains
no formaldehyde, it use has allowed the manufacturer to reduce formaldehyde from
its press and the makeup of its boards. In fact, the boards far exceed CARB Phase
2 emission standards, U.S. Federal HUD emission standards, and European E-1 emission
standards, making them particularly well-suited for homes, schools, hospitals, and
institutions nationwide.
Plywood Manufacturer Significantly Reduces Formaldehyde Emissions By Switching to
Soyad® Adhesive
A North American decorative hardwood plywood manufacturer wanted to reduce the formaldehyde
emissions of its panels to a level meeting CARB Phase 2 emission standards. Hercules
recommended that the manufacturer replace its existing urea formaldehyde-based adhesive
system with a Soyad® adhesive system. Upon converting to the Soyad® adhesive,
formaldehyde emissions were reduced to meet CARB 2 standards, which allowed the
panels to qualify for LEED® points.

* Based on Boil Test
- Formaldehyde Free The Soyad adhesive system
is a combination of a proprietary resin and a natural, renewable resource giving
the customer the assurance that the products they are manufacturing do not contain
any additional formaldehyde.
- LEED Compliant Products properly manufactured
with the Soyad adhesive system are LEED compliant and may contribute points for
EQ Credit 4.4 for Low-Emitting Materials: Composite Wood.
- CARB Phase II Ready Products properly
manufactured with the Soyad adhesive system will meet or exceed the new California
Air Resource Board Phase I and Phase II standards for formaldehyde emissions.
- Adhesive Cost The Soyad adhesive system
is cost competitive with other UF alternative adhesives such as PF, MUF, pMDI, and
PVAc through a combination of actual glue costs and processing time.
- Pot Life The shelf life of the components
that make-up the Soyad adhesive system exceeds 60 days. The pot life of the mix
itself can still be utilized up to 24 hours giving the customer the comfort in knowing
that their delivery system will run smoothly.
- Cure Speed and Temperature The Soyad adhesive
system takes slightly longer to cure at comparable temperatures of a traditional
UF system. As compared to other adhesive alternatives, customers should be pleased
with their productivity in using the new Soyad adhesive technology.
- Water Resistance Composite panels and
interior hardwood plywood can withstand the rigorous boil test without falling apart
like a UF system.
- Color Color of the glue lines or the composite
panel has always been an area of concern. The Soyad adhesive is very light in color
and allows the true color of the wood to show unlike some of the alternative adhesives.
This is a critical characteristic in many end-user applications.
- Sprayable The Soyad adhesive system is
a perfect fit for the customer who requires their adhesive to be sprayed into their
blenders. The mixed adhesive typically runs below 500 centipoise which will be a
excellent viscosity for most spraying applications.
- Handling and Clean-up Most adhesive manufacturers
only concentrate on the actual performance characteristics of their adhesives, but
the Soyad adhesive system has to be the easiest, most environmentally friendly system
to handle and clean up. Because there are no harmful constituents in the mix, most
municipalities will allow the wash water to be simply put down the drain. The Soyad
adhesive does not stick to machine parts and hoses like other systems. Simply wash
it off with warm water.
