Biomimicry: a newer branch of science that tries to sustainably
solve design and engineering issues by looking at nature's solutions to the same
problems. As Janine M. Benyus explains in her book, Biomimicry: Innovation Inspired
by Nature, "Our planet-mates (plants, animals, and microbes) have been patiently
perfecting their wares for more than 3.8 billion years... turning rock and sea into
a life-friendly home. What better models could there be?"

PureBond®: The simple solution.
Columbia Forest Products' hardwood plywood featuring
PureBond® formaldehyde-free technology is made using a soy flour-based
formula that not only reduces your exposure to VOC's but is also endowed with the
added benefit of improved water resistance - all at no additional cost. PureBond®
can also be specified using
FSC-certified wood products, making it the ultimate in green choices for
the savvy remodeler.
PureBond® products are priced panel for panel at a cost-competitive level with
other plywood materials used to build cabinets, furniture, and wall panels - and
they are available across North America. In short, there's no reason NOT to use
PureBond® when your project calls for hardwood plywood.
Be sure to ask your builder, remodeler, cabinet shop or supplier to specify your
project with PureBond® materials. Go green and healthy with your hardwood plywood.
A cost-neutral way to go green.
Depending on the type of cabinets being compared, it may not cost anymore to build
them with PureBond® hardwood plywood than with panel products containing urea
formaldehyde (UF)-based adhesives.
The key difference in cost is the core of the plywood being used – this can be an
all-wood veneer core, particleboard core or MDF core. Columbia's PureBond® veneer
core hardwood plywood is priced at a cost-neutral basis to our discontinued UF veneer
core – we don't charge a premium for providing a healthier and more environmentally
responsible product.
In the end, it's important to keep in mind the REAL bottom line. Can one put a price
on good health? Adverse health effects from toxin exposures, which can lead to medical
visits and days off from school or work, are on the rise. Asthma alone leads to
two million emergency visits and causes 5,000 deaths a year. What if you could greatly
reduce the number of chemical irritants surrounding you and your family with this
one easy choice?
Your PureBond® fabricator, kitchen dealer,
remodeler or builder will be able to help you compare your options.
Mussels and Soybeans: the story of PureBond®
Standing on the craggy Oregon coastline, Dr. Kaichang Li noticed that mussels had
the uncanny ability to grip tightly to rocks despite the fierce repetition of battering
waves. As an associate professor of wood science at Oregon State University, Dr.
Li wanted to explore the potential of creating new wood adhesives from this concept.
Coincidentally, Columbia Forest Products had been searching for a formaldehyde-free
alternative after finding that many of their UF-based suppliers had no interest
in developing a resin that could potentially put them out of business. Meanwhile,
Li's extensive mussel research - and a tofu dinner or two - led him to link the
proteins in soy flour with the bonding process happening for the mussels and lo!
PureBond® was born.
In May 2003, Li and Columbia Forest Products, in conjunction with manufacturer Hercules
Inc. made plywood history. This new proprietary adhesive is a naturally derived,
non-toxic alternative to traditional, formaldehyde-based plywood glues.
In July 2007, Dr. Li, Columbia, and Hercules received the "Greener Synthetic Pathways Award" - a Presidential Green
Chemistry Challenge Award for their work in building a greener future.
Now that's a recipe worth saving!
